Re-focusing

I haven't written in depth in awhile about how things are going with regards to my goals, so I will now.

I've lost a bit of weight, which is good!  Unfortunately, I've been slacking a little bit lately in the food department and majorly in the workout department.  I'm trying really hard to get back to working out every day, but it's very hard.  Working retail isn't easy, especially during Christmas, and it's been taking a lot out of me.  So to work out before going to work or to come home and work out is really, really hard.  Especially after spending the day running around like a headless chicken and putting up with some pretty crazy people.  On the bright side, all the running around is actually burning quite a few calories.  It just doesn't feel like it.

So if anyone has suggestions/ideas to motivate me, please please please share them.  I am in desperate need of motivation to actually get up and work out.  At this point, knowing that I really should is not enough.  I'm trying to come up with a goal/reward system, but I feel like the creative part of my brain is tapped out.  I am certain that this is just a phase because work has become the most stressful that it will be all year and if I can make it through the holidays, I can handle anything.

As far as the German learning goes, my computer's mini-meltdown slowed me down a bit.  However, ever since getting my book about English/German grammar, I've realized that Rosetta Stone is not cutting it.  If I want to learn the language the best way for me, I need to do what I did for my class in college: go flashcard crazy.  I have no doubt that I'm able to memorize (and remember!) any number of words in the German language if I use my flashcards.  Freshman year for my German class, I had a stack over a foot high and I knew every single one of those words.  Plus my memory is fantastic - I still remember words that I haven't used in five years.  I just need to go back to going through my German textbook and making flashcards of those words, plus all the words that I learn through Rosetta Stone, and for words I've learned from Facebook, and really from anywhere I come in contact with the German language.  And then I need to study them until I know them.  I can memorize 99% of the words in four flips through a stack of flashcards.  After I know the words, I can learn the grammar.  I know that Rosetta Stone does both together, but my brain doesn't work like that.  I just have the advantage of knowing what works for me, and I'm going to go back to that.

Fortunately, I have tomorrow off so I'm going to try to be really productive on several things, but these especially.  I have 11 months left to get where I want to be, and I'm pretty sure I'm going to need every last second.

With that said, I'm going to go to bed to get enough sleep that I'm able to start getting back on track with my goals!

Tschüss!

  1. Hey, so on the days that I know that I'm going to have a lot of work to do and that I'm going to be tired at the end of the day (which right now is almost every day), I drink a cup of coffee or tea about 45 minutes before I want to work out. It gives me the boost of energy I need without being on too much of a caffeine rush. As long as you don't add too much sugar, cream, or milk to your drink (so as to make it unhealthy) and you keep it at just the one cup, it has definitely been a good way to get me to work out.

  2. I work 13 hour shifts on my feet as a nurse so I don't have much time or energy for a full workout on top of that. What I do is look at my week in advance, pick the longest days, and just aim for a 5 minute workout with handweights or ab exercises on those days. 5 minutes usually turns into 10 (but rarely more than that). Pinterest actually has some really good ideas for quick bodyweight exercises!

  3. If you are determined to get a full workout on those days, I can call you at 5 AM when I finish my workout when I pick up walking again this week ;)
