A little bit frustrated, a little bit motivated

I made a comment in my last post that I was frustrated with studying German. I absolutely love the language and am still very excited to learn it, but we live in a society where we can get pretty much whatever we want when we want it, and I really want to be able to speak German. Unfortunately, I have no way to download the language into my brain and it's hard to test my progress to see how far I've come. Plus there is still a TON I don't know and it's frustrating, because I get so excited thinking I've come a long way and then I'll come across something written in German and not have a clue what's being said. I can look up words and get the gist, but that's not enough.

Obviously I knew that it would take me a long time or I would have made it a 2 month goal, not a 12 month goal. It's just that with the weight loss, I can look at the scale every day and see a number that tells me what I'm doing is working. I don't have that with the German.

In any event, things are going well with the weight loss. I've been sticking with my diet and haven't had any soda in a week or so, which is really good especially considering I've worked most days and would usually get a Mountain Dew or 2. I've already lost a couple of pounds. Even though it isn't much, seeing the numbers on the scale go down is a HUGE motivator. :) I just need to figure out some way to test my progress in German and I'll be happy as a clam on both counts. (Maybe I'll get the teacher's edition for the book I have and then I can check my answers on the exercises?)

Advice/suggestions/comments of any sort are, as always, welcomed and encouraged. :)

Tschüss!

  1. Learning a new language, or anything really, always has its challenges. The only suggestion I have is to keep the faith, keep plugging through it and you'll get there, progress measured or not. I have a friend besides you who speaks German, and if you're interested, I can ask if she wouldn't mind emailing back and forth with you, though I think you mentioned you're already doing that with a native speaker which is probably better.
